If you are planning to travel to Bulgaria, you will need to acquire a vignette or pay a route-based toll in order to use the entire road network. We will provide you with an overview of whether you only need to order a vignette for your vehicle or whether you need to purchase an on-board device for the route-based toll at local toll stations.
There are different vehicle classes that are subject to the vignette requirement. Generally, vehicles up to 3.5 tons gross vehicle weight (GVW) require a vignette, while vehicles over 3.5 tons GVW must pay a route-based toll. However, there is one exception.
Motorcycles are the exception, as when traveling by motorcycle, you are not required to show a vignette or pay the route-based toll.
If you are traveling to Bulgaria by car, you will need a vignette. The route-based toll is not relevant for you.
If you are traveling with your car and a trailer to Bulgaria, you will also need a vignette. As long as your car with the trailer weighs less than 3.5 tons GVW, a vignette for the car is sufficient. However, if your vehicle with the trailer exceeds 3.5 tons GVW, you will need an additional vignette for the trailer. The route-based toll is not relevant for you even if the total weight exceeds 3.5 tons GVW.
If you are traveling to Bulgaria by motorhome, you will need a vignette regardless of the weight of your motorhome. The route-based toll is not relevant for you, even if the total weight exceeds 3.5 tons GVW.
Commercial vehicles over 3.5 tons GVW must pay a route-based toll. This includes most trucks due to their allowable gross vehicle weight of 3.5 tons GVW. The amount of toll varies depending on the vehicle, as the route-based toll is based on the kilometers traveled, the Euro emission class, the number of axles, and the type of road. The toll payment can be made either in advance through a route card/route pass (providing information about the route you plan to take) or through an electronic on-board device (On-Board Unit) or a GPS tracker.
Please note that in Bulgaria, there are special toll routes. Regardless of an already purchased vignette or the payment of a route-based toll, additional fees apply for the use of special toll routes. These special toll routes include the Danube crossings, which are located between Bulgaria and Romania.
