Bulgaria has a vignette requirement. The toll is collected through the vignette to cover costs, such as the maintenance of the road network. As a traveler, it is necessary to acquire a vignette (with exceptions for motorcyclists and vehicles weighing over 3.5 tons GVW) in order to freely use all routes of the Bulgarian road network.
In addition to the vignette requirement, Bulgaria also has a route-based toll. The route-based toll applies to vehicles with a total weight over 3.5 tons GVW (motorhomes are excluded).
Before your trip, find out which vehicle class your vehicle belongs to, so you know whether you need a vignette or if you need to pay the toll through a route-based toll.
If you use Bulgaria's national roads or highways without a valid (digital) vignette, you must pay a fine of 300 BGN (approximately €160). If you purchase a vignette on the same day, an additional payment of 70 BGN (approximately €36) is possible. Costs you definitely want to avoid!
Planning to travel to Bulgaria but forgot to purchase a vignette? Do it quickly with us, easily from home and digitally registered to your car. Because: Without a vignette, you risk fines.
Regardless of the vignette or the route-based toll, toll fees are charged for crossing the Danube between Romania and Bulgaria. The crossings are considered special toll routes, meaning every vehicle owner who wants to use this crossing must pay a fee. Therefore, we want to point out that additional fees apply for using certain routes, such as the Danube crossings, and the vignette does not entitle you to free use of the Danube crossings.
